Hidden beneath the ocean surface lie thousands of old shipwrecks slowly leaking oil.
GAIA works to monitor, alert, and eventually stop these invisible threats through tech and awareness campaigns.
GAIA – Association for Ocean Protection
Our association is dedicated to addressing an often-overlooked environmental challenge: the millions of tons of oil that still remain trapped inside the tanks of sunken shipwrecks throughout the world’s oceans.
Our long-term mission is to raise awareness of this issue and contribute to the development of practical solutions for the future recovery and removal of these pollutants.
To support this mission, we are currently building the SWATH vessel GAIA2 in Zurich, Switzerland.
GAIA2 is based on the experience gained from our first vessel, GAIA1. Designed and built by our team, GAIA1 received official approval to operate on Lake Zurich and successfully completed a voyage from Switzerland to the Mediterranean Sea.
With GAIA2, we are taking the concept to the next level.
The new vessel will be larger, more stable, and more versatile. It is intended to support environmental projects, educational activities, documentaries, public outreach initiatives, and future ocean protection missions.
A central aspect of the project is the public construction process.
People are invited to follow the development of the vessel and witness how an idea gradually becomes reality. The entire build is documented through social media, videos, livestreams, and public events.
GAIA2 is more than a technical project.
It is a place for learning, collaboration, and innovation. We aim to bring people together, share knowledge, and demonstrate that collective action can create meaningful solutions to complex challenges.
